(in between and back again

The world is so suffocating. Man has placed his token on every stone.
Every word, every image is leased and mortgaged. We know that a picture is but
a space in which a variety of images, none of them original, bland and clash. A
picture is a tissue of quotations drawn from the innumerable centres of
culture. Similar to those eternal copyists Bouvard and Pechuchet, we indicate
the profound ridiculousness that is precisely the truth of painting. We can
only imitate a gesture that is always anterior, never original. Succeeding the
painter, the plagiarist no longer bears within him passions, humours, feeling,
impressions, but rather the immense encyclopaedia from which he draws. The
viewer is the tablet on which all the quotations that make up painting are inscribed
without any of them being lost. A painting’s meaning lies not in its origin,
but in its destination. The birth of the viewer must be at the cost of the
painter
Sherrie Levine, ‘Statement’ (incorporating appropriated phrases from sources such as Roland Barthes’ ‘The Death of the Author’).

Why I appropriate
When I started this work, I considered myself a still life artist and bookplates were my main
subject. I wanted to make images that held on to their reference to the bookplates. And I wanted
my images to have a material presence that was as interesting as the originals, but still very
different.
I wanted to create images that were contradictory in themselves. I wanted to put one image on
top of another, so that sometimes you could see both images and sometimes both images
disappeared. Basically, what interested me most was this vibration - that space in between
where no image can be seen, more like a void, a forgetting.
Energy is built up by the interaction between things. One and one does not always make two, but
sometimes five or eight or ten, depending on the number of interactions you can set in motion in
the situation. Like a burlesque comedian, I have an abnormal penchant for the kind of precision
that creates movement: "Would you hit a woman with a child?" - "No, I would hit her with a brick."
There is certainly a controversial and Oedipal aspect to my work. But I don't think it helps to see
the dominant culture as monolithic or exclusively patriarchal. I prefer to see it as a polyphony of
unconscious voices that can also be in conflict with each other. If I just listen carefully to these
voices, I might be able to work with some of them and create something almost new.
